Members appointed to conduct Manitoba Workers Compensation Act review

WINNIPEG — The Manitoba government has appointed four people to the Workers Compensation Act legislative review committee, which is mandated to conduct a review of the legislation at least once every 10 years.

The committee members are:

  • Lawrie Cherniack, chair, is an experienced lawyer, arbitrator, mediator and educator, with extensive service on provincial and municipal boards. He is the former vice-chair of both the Manitoba Labour Board and Manitoba Human Rights Commission.
  • Aaron Dolyniuk, representing employers, is the executive director of the Manitoba Trucking Association. He has extensive experience in transportation and trucking, focusing on safety, labour practices and professional driver training.  
  • Lynne Fernandez, representing the public interest, held the Errol Black Chair in Labour Issues at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives. She has worked as an advocate, instructor and researcher of public policy, economics, migrant workers and labour issues. 
  • Rick Rennie, representing workers, is the director of workplace safety, health and education at the Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL). He also serves on the boards of the MFL Occupational Health Centre and Workplace Education Manitoba and represents workers on the minister’s advisory council for workplace safety and health.

According to a release, the committee must report its findings and recommendations to the minister of labour and immigration and the Workers Compensation Board upon completion, which is expected to take 16 months.

A report is anticipated for Dec. 31, 2026, with appointments set to expire on March 31, 2027.
