VICTORIA – The Building Builders mentorship program is officially open.
The British Columbia Construction Association (BCCA) program is designed to connect unemployed and underemployed workers in British Columbia with experienced mentors across all disciplines of the provincial construction industry.
“If you don’t have the right contacts, it can be hard to navigate a career in the construction industry. Guidance counsellors, parents and teachers aren’t always fully informed about the opportunities or encouraging of a non-academic path. BCCA is thrilled to connect industry leaders with young talent, get their questions answered, get them personal advice from experts who really know the way, and help them fulfill their career goals,” BCCA president Chris Atchison said in a press release.
The average age of an apprentice is 27, a BCCA release stated, and “BCCA hopes that Building Builders will help first-year apprentices get started earlier and stay in the system by providing personalized, ongoing career guidance.”
There are 300 mentee positions in the program and each mentee will be matched with a construction leader who aligns with their goals and experience, the release stated. Mentors are screened to make sure they have been working in the construction industry for 10 years.
The program runs through a 12-month mentorship period and is funded to run for the next three years. Funding for the program is through the Ministry of Employment and Social Development Canada.
Mentees will receive Site Ready safety training and both mentees and mentors will receive cultural training through the BCCA’s Builder’s Code. Early adopters of the program include EllisDon, Penfolds Roofing and Corrcoat Services Inc., the release said.
