A young worker was climbing a 6-foot metal ladder to assist a co-worker in the cleaning and maintenance of an asphalt mixer. The young worker, who was wearing a hard hat, was struck in the head by a piece of asphalt (6 to 8 inches long) and fell about 3 feet to the ground.
