Technical Safety BC (formerly BC Safety Authority) is proposing changes that would affect the elevating devices industry and owners and managers of buildings with elevating devices. They are proposing that:
- The 2016 edition of the ASME A17.1/CSA B44 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators be adopted into the Elevating Devices Safety Regulation, including:
- Requiring a maintenance control program for all new and existing elevating devices (excluding lifts for persons with physical disabilities and personnel hoists)
- Requiring specific safety system testing for all new and existing elevating devices (excluding lifts for persons with physical disabilities and personnel hoists)
- Requiring specific safety system testing on regular intervals for all new and existing escalators; and
- “Supervision” of mechanics-in-training be defined in the Elevating Devices Safety Regulation.
For more information on these proposed changes and their impacts, they invite you to read the discussion paper and provide your feedback by the consultation closing date of December 1, 2017.
