VICTORIA – The Government of British Columbia has launched a survey to take the pulse of the public regarding changes to the BC Building Code.

Proposed changes to the code are based on the 2020 National Model Codes with some B.C.-specific variations to address geography, local government needs, climate, industry practices and provincial government priorities.

The four-week public review asks comment on:

  • Accessibility and adaptable dwellings;
  • cooling requirements;
  • mass timber construction;
  • earthquake design;
  • radon safety; and
  • ventilation in houses.

People can provide feedback via an online survey which is open until June 15.

Summaries of draft code language are provided for review as well as draft accessibility language informed by early engagement with the public and industry on opportunities to increase accessibility in new buildings and homes.

The ministry of housing will review and consider all feedback in drafting the updated building code, a government release stated.

The Province of B.C. estimates adoption of the updated code this year and bringing it into force by December 2023.
