The Steps for Life event is held annually in communities all across Canada to raise awareness for preventing workplace tragedy and funds raised go to support programs for families who have been affected by workplace incidents. The event is a 5 km walk where people come out from all walks of life and from all industries to show support to families that have been affected. Currently there are 27 cities/communities across Canada with events happening in 2023.

The Threads of Life parent organization supports families that have, unfortunately, been affected by those workplace tragedies that occur. This wonderful organization is currently supporting over 3,350 family members across Canada. In order to support those families, funds are raised through Steps for Life events and sponsorships so that the family members can feel supported through:
- Online workshops
- Volunteer family guides
- Family forums
- Prevention and awareness through a speakers bureau – family members are taught to become safety advocates who will go out to communities and industries to share their stories.
The past few years have been challenging due to the global pandemic but last year they came back strong and are hoping that 2023 will be the best year yet! This year the planning committee is looking at expanding the event by having more awareness raised through the involvement of more companies and organizations. What Steps for Life is hoping to gain in the next few weeks leading up to the event are the following:
- Community sponsorship – unfortunately, the cutoff date for having logo’s on promotional items has passed but organizations are welcome to bring banners for the day of the event.
- Registration – the walk is a wonderful way for people to come out and show their support to the cause and to workplace health and safety. Registration is free! Registration only takes a couple minutes to complete. There is an opportunity to fundraise when registering, but is not mandatory.
- Donations – A key part of the Steps for Life event is fundraising through donations. Donations don’t need to necessarily be monetary, they are also accepting “In Kind” donations for event day of snacks, beverages, etc. as well as raffle items.
